Marion County: Thompson to play for Pikeville

Former Marion County High School quarterback Trey Thompson has signed to play NAIA football for Pikeville (Ky.) College.

The 6-foot, 180-pound Thompson earned Class 2A all-state recognition as a junior, when he threw for more than 1,500 yards, including 350 in a playoff game. Injuries limited him to seven games as a senior, but he still threw for more than 900 yards and owns every passing record in Warriors history.

He threw for 103 yards and two TDs in the Tennessee-Georgia all-star game last month at Finley Stadium.

“I liked all the (Pikeville) coaches I met and the fact that they run the spread offense,” said Thompson, who was also being recruited by Maryville College, Lambuth University and Faulkner University. “Even though I didn’t know anybody up there, I felt real comfortable and knew right away that’s where I wanted to be.

“The only bad thing was when I saw their colors are orange and black,” he added, alluding to the combination for Marion’s county rival, South Pittsburg. “I’ve never had to wear orange and black in any sport. It’s going to be weird coming home for Marion County games wearing orange and black with a big ‘P’ on it.”

Pikeville competes in the Mid-South Conference and is coached by former University of Tennessee at Chattanooga assistant Mac Bryan. After consecutive trips to the playoffs in 2005 and ’06, the Bears were 4-7 last year.
