Chattanooga: Shooting suspect arrested, victim in critical condition

Chattanooga police are investigating a shooting that occurred about 3:45 p.m. Tuesday at 1921 Jackson St., near the corner of Roanoke Avenue and Jackson Street.

Neighbors reported hearing two men shouting, followed by the sound of gunfire.

The victim, Pierre Horton, 19, was taken to Erlanger hospital with a gunshot wound to the head, according to Sgt. Jerri Weary, public information officer for the Chattanooga Police Department. Mr. Horton was listed in critical condition Tuesday evening, Sgt. Weary said.

The shooting suspect, Tony Raines, 46, was taken to Erlanger after returning to the scene of the shooting, shirtless and bleeding from an apparent head injury, said Lt. Tim Carroll, head of the major crimes division. He told police that he and Mr. Horton were acquaintances. They had been drinking and got into a verbal and physical altercation, Mr. Raines told police.

Mr. Raines was treated and released into police custody and is expected to be charged with attempted first-degree murder and aggravated assault, Lt. Carroll said.

Neighbor Alfonsia Jones, who has lived in the duplex unit near the corner for about a year, said he was standing in the doorway of his home when he heard three gunshots and saw a man fall to the ground on the street corner.

Mr. Raines lives next door to Mr. Jones.

Tamesia Davenport, of Walker Avenue, said she heard a loud argument about 10 minutes before hearing gunshots. Seeing a man lying on the corner in a bloody white T-shirt, she said she stood by his side to keep him calm while waiting for the ambulance to arrive.

“He was saying he couldn’t breathe,” she said. “I pray that he makes it.”
