Walker Valley sweeps golf wins

Walker Valley High School golfer Hunter Vest is the envy of high-handicappers across the Tennessee Valley.

The junior pulled most of his shots left during a three-way match Monday at the Champions Club at Hampton Creek.

He hit one fairway out of nine. He hit three greens in regulation.

And he still managed to par each hole for a score of 36.

“It was not a boring round of golf because I got up and down from everywhere,” said Vest, who claims to be 5-foot-5 with shoes on. “Every single shot was left, left, left.

“I’m usually the kid who hits every green but doesn’t putt, and today was the complete opposite.”

Vest’s most impressive magic trick came on the par-4 No. 8, when his second shot landed behind rocks preventing easy access to the green.

“I flopped it over the rocks,” he said. “Then I made a 20-footer for par — again.”

The Mustangs totaled 150 with Vest and Caleb Evans shooting even par and two others shooting 3-over. Ooltewah sophomore Logan Chambers also shot a 36, with two birdies and two bogeys.

“In any given match, our one through four or five can be No. 1, so that’s a great luxury we have,” Walker Valley coach Bob Williams said. “The senior class took their lumps as sophomores, and they’re moving on from their junior year.”

Ooltewah finished second with a 157 and Bradley Central had a 169. In the girls’ competition, Walker Valley won with an 88, Ooltewah was second at 100 and Bradley third at 103.

Walker Valley freshman Avery George won medalist honors with a 39.

“I watched her play as a middle-schooler and I knew she had great potential,” Williams said. “She’s got unlimited potential and she has aspirations to play college golf.”
